Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: Bob Hartley Fired, More Caggiula, Giants Move to Langley A look at the fallout for the Canucks and possibly Utica Comets coach Travis Green after the Calgary Flames fire Bob Hartley, plus more thoughts on Drake Caggiula and the WHL Vancouver Giants are moving to Langley.

Thank you Carol.

I keep hearing top 6 potential in Cagguila. We are clearly not going to see this upside and potential for years to come but everyone keeps saying he is a legit NHL prospect on any team.

That sucks about the Giants moving all the way to Langley - it was very convenient having them play in the Coliseum and provided for more motivation to see the team (then having to drive out to Langley - anyone have any comments on the facilities there? Carol, have you seen any games there? if so, what was the vibe and atmosphere like? and were there any particular elements of the facilities which stood out?).

I'm just wondering what the motivation was (unless it was purely from a financial perspective) Did the Giant's lease with the Coliseum expire? and were they not happy with the arrangements? (i.e. gate receipts vs concession/parking share of profits? etc). It just seems like a bit of a step backward

LEC is a great venue. A little puzzling they would downsize so much, particularly with some of their rival games selling so many tickets but good to see they will still use the Coliseum in some capacity to offset the smaller rink. The facility is top notch and easy to get to (though limited/no transit from anywhere further than Langley). It was perfect for BCHL hockey, and we will see how it suits for WHL but it doesnt have as bad seat, and the boxes up top are comfortably nice too

Motivation was financial, apparently the lease was quite substantial and the costs of maintaining the facility kept being billed to the Giants despite much of the damage had come through concerts and other events (and billed at union wage as Ron Toigo mentioned haha). The owners are just looking forward to a clean slate/reset of the franchise: new arena, new GM, new coach and a new top pick to market. Long term I dont know what they expect will come from a move to Langley, but I wouldnt be surprised if they keep their eyes open on other facilities (Surrey has been rumoured to be looking at a new mini stadium/arena for a few years now) and plan another move when the team resurfaces from the basement

I was listening to 1040 a bit this morning, it sounds like the radio station has a stake in the future success of the Giants with how much support they are showing for this move. That is one fecked up station.

Thanks for your input, given some of the managerial/coaching moves and the unfavourable lease, it certainly makes more sense that they would want to move to a different facility and start 'fresh'. And as you mentioned, at least they aren't fully cutting ties to the Coliseum, which would hopefully mean a better over all chance to host some bigger event ala the Memorial Cup or International Series etc

They are paid partners so they have to be onboard or no new contract

Easy move:

1. Huge Fan Base with Zero Competition.
2. Much more attractive lease and parking revenue.

Anything else?

Now I am biased.... I live in Delta and will soon be a season ticket holder.

I'm mixed on my opinion of this move. I'm not in Vancouver, so going to Giants games were low on my priority because of getting there wasnt very convenient, though I like the entertainment value of watching them play live. I also think that the communities are a little underserved in Surrey, Langley, Aldergrove for that kind of entertainment. BCHL does a decent job (Rivermen actually had top in-house production for that level because of the LEC), but the Giants will bring that next level and definitely bring more of these associations out to the rink on a regular basis. The downside is that its a smaller rink and well outside Vancouver. 5k attendance just seems small for the WHL and a steep drop for what has been a very successful franchise. I hope they maintain a regular schedule with the Coliseum and not just 2-3 games per year. Its really fun to go back in that rink from time to time despite commuting from Surrey

lols. no doubt. but people in on that side of the river will support hockey.

in any case.

1040 personalities suck for the most part. i remember when rogers got the NHL deal, Don Taylor started going on about how the, "maple leafs are a good exciting young team"... what a joke... he got on his knees for rogers/ sportsnet and they slapped his arse down and hired all those idiots from Toronto...

My favorite quote from Shanahan after they won was:

Yeah sure you didn't

He definitely deserved one year of free cushion after that first year.
